Negative taken of drawing of Dr. N.B. Houser of Helena, Phillips County, Arkansas from the book "How I Succeeded In My Business" by Rev. A.H. Miller published in 1911. Dr. N.B. Houser was a leading African American physician and an ardent friend of Rev. A.H. Miller. N.B. Houser was born in Gastonia, Gaston County, North Carolina in 1869. In 1881, he enrolled in Biddle University in Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina and six years later entered medical school at Shaw University where he finished three years later with honors. He practiced first in Charlotte, served two years as secretary and one year as president of the North Carolina Colored Medical Association. He served on the staff at the Samaritan Hospital, the only black. He moved to Helena, Arkansas in 1901 and opened a practice. In 1904, he established the Black Diamond Drug Company. He married Annie S. Alston who kept books for her husband and taught music. Dr. Houser was a prominent citizen of Helena where he served as president of the Helena Negro Business League in 1910.
